Tyler and Maria chit-chat for an eternity. Still, I gradually feel more and more at home. Possibly mostly because of the wine. But maybe also because of something else.

I study Tyler closely. He looks like your typical American frat boy, who is doing a gap year in Europe, where he shags a ton of ladies under cover of his Rocky-Mountains talents. The kind of guy the old Anya would have jumped at.

My eyes start to sparkle. And little by little the facial expressions follow. Maybe old Anya isn’t that far gone anyway. I guess it’s kind of nuts to keep insisting on being sad. Because when I actually think about it, I am not really anymore. Maybe it is the open fire. Maybe it is the wine. Maybe it is Tyler, who is actually hot as hell.

Tyler is also funny. He fools around with the fondue forks and tells amusing anecdotes about people on the slopes and rich widows from Switzerland.

“Once there was this older lady with diamond-encrusted ski boots. But she just sat in the ski lift all day long, drinking gin and tonic from a just as diamond-encrusted hip flask. ‘Young man’ she called to me every time she passed me. And before I knew it, I had wasted an hour trying to make her happy.”

“Was she happy?” I wink.

“I think so,” he answers.

But in the next second he realizes what I actually meant.

“No… it’s not like…she just needed help to… um…” mutters Tyler.

I smile, increasingly aware of my facial expressions, and retrieve the good old flirty glance. Maria recognizes it immediately and excuses herself.

“I’m gonna head to bed now,” she says and winks. “You two love birds look like you could use a bit of alone time. See you in the morning.”

And then she is gone.

Tyler and I laugh together. Awkwardly. But together.

“Um,” he mumbles.

“Yes, um…” I giggle.

He bashfully pokes the dessert scraps on his plate.

I hide my face in my shoulder.

“It’s a really good pie,” he says. “Did you make it?”

“Mmm,” I answer, even though Maria got it from a store and lugged it with her up here.

I take another sip of wine. Tyler does the same.

He clears his throat.

“Your friend… she is kind of…like… something else,” he whispers while glancing at the door to make sure that Maria doesn’t show up unexpected.

“Yes,” I laugh. “She found you on Instagram on the way up here, and… well…this… the two of us… this was probably her plan from the very beginning. Once she gets something in her head, she doesn’t stop.”

“Okay…” he answers and his beautiful eyes pierce mine. “And how do you feel about this plan?”

“Surprisingly okay,” I whisper as I lean over the table and kiss him.

His lips are as hot as the fireplace. But they don’t burn me.

We fall into the couch. He pulls off my sweater. Grins when he sees that I am not the type who wears a bra. He caresses my breasts and kisses them. Lays me down and leans over me.
